Build a better storage spot
Use a supported vertical shelf away from windows, heat-producing appliances and damp exterior walls. Avoid tight packing or leaning piles. Keep discs in clean inner sleeves and protect jackets with suitable outer sleeves.
Plan for summer heat
Choose the coolest stable room available. Avoid leaving a delivery in a car, on a balcony or in direct sunlight. Arrange indoor receipt where possible. Keep the turntable itself away from direct sun.
Make monsoon checks a habit
Inspect the shelf for dampness, musty smells and condensation. Let sleeves and discs dry fully before storage. Keep the collection raised above floor level where water ingress is possible. A hygrometer can reveal persistent humidity; address the room’s moisture rather than relying on small desiccant packets alone.
A gentle cleaning routine
Handle the edge and label with clean, dry hands. Follow your record-cleaning product’s instructions, use tools intended for vinyl, and keep the label dry. Avoid household sprays and improvised solvents. Check the turntable maker’s instructions before cleaning the stylus.
If a disc shows mould, isolate it from the collection and get specialist advice before cleaning or playing it. Do not use heat or a home oven to flatten a warped record.
When a record arrives
- Bring the parcel indoors and allow it to reach room conditions before opening if temperatures differ substantially.
- Inspect the jacket, edges and playing surfaces without touching the grooves.
- Photograph any damage and contact the seller promptly under their agreed terms.
- Replace damaged sleeves and store the disc upright after listening.
