Buying used vinyl records in India: what to check

Decide what matters to your listening

A shelf copy, a quiet listening copy and a collectible edition are different purchases. Tell the seller which you need. If you listen to quieter songs, ask specifically about audible noise during soft passages. If the cover matters as much as playback, ask for the spine, corners and both faces of the jacket.

Understand the condition shorthand

In the Goldmine grading used by Discogs, NM means Near Mint, VG+ means Very Good Plus and VG means Very Good. VG is not another way to say nearly new: audible surface noise can be present. G or G+ describes more substantial wear. Read the seller’s actual notes rather than relying on the letters alone.

A record and its cover can have different grades. Ask for both. If a listing says “excellent”, ask what that means in observable terms and which grading system the seller uses.

Ask for evidence that answers your concern

• Readable label and runout photos for the edition.
• Angled photographs of each playing surface.
• Notes about repeating clicks, skips or visible warps.
• A short playback sample from a relevant passage, where available.

A short sample is not a full play-test. Ask whether both sides were played through and what equipment was used if a playback issue is being discussed. Phone recordings can also hide or exaggerate background noise.

Compare the complete deal

Check what is included: the original jacket, inner sleeve and any advertised inserts. Compare the delivered price and the agreed remedy if the received copy differs from its description. Keep the item photos and written condition notes with your order details.
