How to start a vinyl record collection in India

Build your first vinyl collection in India: choose albums, check turntable compatibility, set a budget and plan safe storage.

Quick answer

Start with an album you already enjoy, a compatible playback setup and space to store records upright. Confirm the edition and condition before adding more records. A small collection you play is a useful starting point.

Choose music before choosing a variant

Make a short list of albums you enjoy from beginning to end. Think about what you want from the experience: a soundtrack you grew up with, contemporary pop, or an album you can listen to without skipping tracks. If you are unsure, start with one favourite and learn from that purchase.

Use the artist directory for familiar pop names or the Bollywood guide for Hindi film music. Neither is a live stock list.

Check the playback setup

Check the speed printed on the record against the speeds supported by your turntable. Also check how your turntable connects to your amplifier or speakers. A phono-level output and a line-level input are not interchangeable without a suitable phono stage in the chain.

Some turntables include a switchable phono preamp; others need an external one or an amplifier with the appropriate input. Read the manual for your exact model before connecting equipment or buying adapters. Do not assume a turntable alone provides a complete speaker system.

Budget for the whole first purchase

Include the record, delivery and any sleeves or storage you need. If buying used, ask whether both sides were played and what flaws were heard. If buying sealed, still confirm the edition, contents and the seller’s process for a defective copy.

Give the collection a home

Before the parcel arrives, make upright shelf space away from sun and damp walls. Keep the disc in its sleeve when you are not playing it, and handle the edge rather than the grooves. In Indian summers and monsoons, a stable indoor storage spot matters more than a decorative stack on a windowsill.

After your first few listens, note what you liked about the format and what you want next. Let listening guide the collection instead of treating every colour variant as essential.

Frequently asked question

Do I need a record player before buying my first LP?

You can collect before owning a player, but you will need compatible playback equipment to listen and assess sound. For a gift, check whether the recipient has a suitable setup.
