Bollywood vinyl records in India: a buying guide

Search by film, singer and song

A favourite song can appear on more than one record. If you want a film soundtrack, give the film title rather than only the singer’s name. If you want a compilation, say whether you prefer one singer, one composer or a particular era. Include a song title when a spelling or transliteration could refer to several recordings.

For a Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar or Mohammed Rafi enquiry, the useful next question is which songs you want to hear. A familiar photograph on the sleeve does not establish the contents of the record.

Original Hindi LP or later reissue?

Ask what supports the seller’s description of an original pressing: the label, catalogue number, country and runout markings should fit the release. A later reissue may be a practical listening copy, while a collector may want a specific older edition. Neither age nor fresh packaging establishes how it will sound.

Compare the physical copy being offered. A photo of another copy of the same title is not enough to assess seam splits, writing, scratches or missing inserts.

Check the songs on both sides

Ask for readable label photos or a typed track list. A 7-inch EP may include only part of a soundtrack, and a compilation may use a different selection than you expect. Confirm whether dialogue, instrumental tracks or alternate recordings are included if those details matter to you.
