LP stands for long play. Most modern LPs are vinyl records, but vinyl also includes singles, EPs and other releases. If a seller says vinyl, still ask which release and format they mean.
What is an LP album?
In everyday buying language, an LP often means the physical record edition of a full-length album. An album can also be issued on other formats. A double LP means two records; it does not automatically mean two separate albums.
What is an LP record versus vinyl?
LP describes a particular kind of record. Vinyl is the broader material or format term. A 7-inch vinyl single is a vinyl record but is not normally described as an LP.
How long is an LP album?
There is no single running time for every LP. Duration depends on the programme and how the release is cut and spread over its discs. Check the edition’s track list and running time rather than expecting a fixed number of minutes per side.
Is an LP always 12 inches and 33⅓ RPM?
That is a common combination, not a safe rule for every record. Some albums use other sizes or speeds. Read the label and your turntable instructions before playback.
Which one should a beginner buy?
Choose the edition that contains the music you want and works with your player. Ask for album name, track list, disc count, speed and condition. Do not pay extra simply because an advertisement uses the word LP.
